Matt's Carolina Tar Heels Fan Page

Dean and Bill This is a tribute to my favorite sports teams... if you must know, I'm not exactly a sports addict, but I definitely have my favorites. I do admit to being a fanatical University of North Carolina Tar Heel fan though..... and I have developed a habit of occasionally referring to retired head basketball coach Dean Smith as "God" in my eye-glazed basketball viewing trances... and of course, I'm proud of the fact that God, er, Dean is the winningest coach in the history of college basketball (879 victories) and has two national championships and 11 Final Four appearances to show for it. Of course, it's interesting to note that Dean won at least 20 games or more every year since I was born in 1969.... coincidence? And of course, October 9, 1997 was a day of mourning, since that was the day Dean announced his retirement at UNC after 36 seasons. After being succeeded by close friend Bill Guthridge, then former player Matt Doherty, the team is now led by Dean's longtime assistant, Roy Williams, who returned to restore Carolina to the ranks of the college basketball elite, and in his second season, won his first national championship (number 4 for UNC). Welcome home, Roy!!!

2005 National Champions Well, I can't say enough for those good ol' Tar Heels this year. 8-20 just 3 seasons ago, Roy Williams returned from Kansas in the summer of 2002 to try to return Carolina to glory. It took less than 2 seasons. Of course, with great talent like Jawad Williams, Raymond Felton, Sean May, and Rashad McCants, anything less than a Final Four finish would have been a disappointment. Dick Vitale, among other college analysts, picked this team to win the ACC this year, along with a national championship... those were high expectations to live up to, and live up they did.barring any major complications. Dook had a rebuiding season... no sympathy for the Blow Devils here. Carolina may have a little rebuilding to do next season, I expect the '05-06 team to greatly resemble the Carolina squad of one season ago (talented young players, no seniors, but a desire to win). We'll be back!!!!

Michael in Carolina Blue I do have a few other favorite teams too... including the NFL Carolina Panthers, the Cincinnati Reds (ten, count 'em, 10 National League pennants...eat your heart out Atlanta), and the Carolina Hurricanes. Of course, being a native North Carolinian and a huge UNC fan, it's only natural that I firmly believe that Michael Jordan is indeed the greatest ever to play the game of basketball. Period.
